Despite measurements and visual inspection of the old seat, I ended up having to exchange this seat for the round one. This, however, proves one point in its favour, it does come in round and oblong! The look is absolutely beautiful. It looks great in the bathroom and is a wonderful way to blend several shades of wood used in cabinets. It is a dream to install - couldn't be simpler. The only complaint I have is a small one - the metal hardware does show, and it does not come with a choice of hardware. Our bathroom primarily uses oil-rubbed bronze mfixtures, but we're putting up with the nickel on the seat in order to have it. A bigger complaint is that it's difficult to find seat hardware in different metals to simply switch out!
Overall, we're very happy with the seat: the look, the ease of installation, and oh yes - bamboo is a nice, sustainable material!!
